30/52 – O Mundo Dentro de Ti / The World Within You

Diz a Wikipedia que Exposição Multipla é “(…) a técnica pela qual o obturador da camera é aberto mais do que uma vez para sensibilizar o filme múltiplas vezes, normalmente com imagens diferentes. A imagem resultante contem as imagens subsequentes sobrepostas no original. A técnica é usada como um efeito visual artistic e pode ser usado para criar imagens fantasmagóricas ou para adicionar pessoas ou objetos numa cena que não estava lá originalmente.”

Infelizmente não temnho nenhum rolo carregado por isso não pude fazer esta brincadeira à “moda antiga”. tive de usar os meios digitais do presente para sobrepôr duas imagens, uma da minha esposa e outra de uma árvore. A escolha das imagens é crucial neste caso, já que se eu tivesse escolhido uma imagem em que a modelo não tivesse o fundo “rebentado”, as folhas da árvore apareceriam estragando o resultado final.

Wikipedia tells us that Multiple Exposure is “(…)a technique in which the camera shutter is opened more than once to expose the film multiple times, usually to different images. The resulting image contains the subsequent image/s superimposed over the original. The technique is sometimes used as an artistic visual effect and can be used to create ghostly images or to add people and objects to a scene that were not originally there.

Unfortunatelly I don’t have any film loaded into my analogue SLR so I couldn’t do thirs “trick” the “old fashion way”. I had to use today’s resources in order to superimpose two images, one of my wife, the other of a tree. The choice of images is crucial because had I not chose a picture with a “blown” background for my model, and I had foliage bleed into that background, ruining the end result.

29/52 - Bricolages / Hobbies

Hoje estou um pouco lento... Mais umas horas e já não conseguia fazer o Projeto 52 a tempo e horas... :) Por isso aqui ficam as criações da minha esposa... São capas para livros, em tecido e napa, bem catitas... Ela faz de imensos tipos e felizmente vende-as, por isso já podem comprar uma... Encomendas podem ser feitas através da página da sua página de Facebook... Uma delas é minha... :)

I'm a tad slow today... A few more hours and I wasn't able to produce my Project 52 on time... :) So here are my wife's creations... They're book covers made of fabric and leatherlike material, pretty neat... She has lots of different models and luckily she sells them, so now you can by at least one... Orders can be made through her Facebook page... One of these is mine...:)

28/52 - Anel de Fogo / Ring of Fire

Na companhia de amigos as fotografias quase que se tiram sozinhas... :) Esta foi tirada num descampado em três exposições diferentes e depois juntas em Photoshop. Uma com flashes azuis na vedação, outra com o anel de fogo e outra para a névoa azul (feita com fio eletroluminescente)... E pronto... Já está...

In friend's company photos seem to take themselves... :) This was shot in an open field in three different exposures and the combined together in Photoshop. One had the blue flashes on the fence, another had the ring of fire and a last one had the blue mist (done with EL Wire)... And that's it... Done...

27/52 - Esperando em Low Key... / Waiting in Low Key...

Desta vez deixo-vos com uma foto da minha linda esposa e inestimável assistente de iluminação... Nada mais do que isso... Um momento de ternura em que que o olhar, lânguido, parece perscrutar o infinito esperando...

26/52 - Pedro Abrunhosa em analógico / Analogue Pedro Abrunhosa

Boa noite, hoje vou ser breve, a minha cabeça doi-me demais... Posso dizer é que esta foto do cantor Pedro Abrunhosa foi tirada no passado dia 21 de junho (no primeiro dia do Festival Portugal ao Vivo), mas em analógico e revelada hoje. Não tem crops, não tem ajustes xpto, trata-se de filme Protopan 400 puxado a 1600ASA revelado durante 19min com Fomadon R09 (1+25) a 23ºC tirada com uma Canon 500.

Good evening, I'll be very brief this time, because I have quite a headache... What I can tell you is that this photo of singer Pedro Abrunhosa was taken on the 21st of June (on the first day of the Portugal ao Vivo Festival), but in film and developed today. It doesn't have any crops, or fanc adjustments, it's Protopan 400 pushed to 1600, developed for 19min with Fomadon R09 (1+25) at 23ºC taken with a Canon 500.

24/52 - A Pequena Sereia / The Little Mermaid

Esta pequena sereia surgiu-me quando estava de férias no Algarve. Só tive tempo de ir buscar o flash e tirar uma fotografia antes de ela desaparecer de novo... Não, agora a sério, é a minha sobrinha linda que aceitou posar para mim mesmo estando cheia de frio... :)

This little mermaid came to me while I was on vacation on the Algarve, Portugal. I only had time to grab my flash and snap up this shot before she disappeared again... No, really, it's my lovelly niece that agreed to model for me even though she was stone cold... :)

23/52 - Black Magic Coffee

Nenhuma versão do Photoshop foi maltratada na execução desta foto... :) Foram usadas quatro fontes de luz distintas numa longa exposição em Bulb (97s). Uma lanterna para iluminar a chávena, um fio eletroluminescente azul para fazer o fumo e dois leds (um vermelho e outro violeta) para fazer os pós de perlimpimpim... :)

No version of Photoshop was harmed in the making of this photo... :) four different light sources were used during a long exposure in Bulb (97s). One flashlight to light the cup, blue EL Wire to make the billowing smoke and two led's (one red and another purple) to do that lovely fairy dust... :)

21/52 - Via Láctea de Neon / Neon Milky Way

Parece que cada vez que eu meto na cabeça fazer uma foto destas, TUDO parece colocar-nos à prova! Pois bem, aconteceu novamente... Eu demorei cerca de 3 horas, para produzir cerca de 40 fotos. Deixem-me tentar explicar todos os passos para a criação desta fotografia.

O primeiro passo é encontrar uma superficie lisa e ligeiramente refletiva, bom, isso foi fácil utilizei a mesa da cozinha. Depois tive de criar uma estrutura a partir da qual se realizaria o gotejamento. Essa já não foi tão facil. Onde, é que às 23h eu ia arranjar uma estrutura que me facilitasse a vida? tentei várias coisas, desde cabos de vassouras com fita cola, a candeiros de péalto, até que lembrei de utilizar um tripé para suporte de flash e uma sombrinha (só para ter uma barra horizontal sobre a mesa).

Depois tratou-se de encontrar uma forma de criar as gotas, mas que eu conseguisse controlar. Tentei um saco furado, mas isso não me dava um local de queda consistente cada vez que eu mexia no saco ou este mudava de forma à medida que se esvaziava. A solução que eu encontrei foi usar um tubo (com garrafa) de soro hospitalar para administração endovenosa .

Com menos esse pormenor para tratar virei-me para a forma de disparo. Sabia que o que me ia congelar a ação seria a luz dos flashes e não o obturador, por isso sabia que ia usar um dispositivo de disparo que tivesse um sensor laser, assim, quando a gota o cruzasse, o dispositivo iria disparar o flash. Usei o Smatrig 2.1 (http://www.doc-diy.net/photo/smatrig21/). Mas para isso é preciso alinhar um laser e o recetor do smatrig. Ai começaram os problemas. É necessário:

- Alinhar o laser e o recetor em altura e a uma altura que o ponto do laser não apareça na foto;
- Alinhar o laser e o recetor em profundidade e garantir que o laser passe pela gota e "toque" no recetor;
- Ligar o Smatrig ao flash por intermédio de um cabo, e esperar que tudo funcione e não tenha de ser mexido.

Para alinhar em altura fui buscar peças de "Lego" da minha filha para que ambos os elementos ficassem a uma altura idêntica, depois coloquei as gotas a correr e, "a olho", alinhei o laser com a gota e o recetor (demorou imenso tempo). Depois liguei o flash e testei tudo. FUNCIONOU!!!! Experimentei outra vez, com um leve atraso no disparo e deixou de funcionar... Estive imenso tempo a tentar perceber o que se tinha passado para finalmente descobrir que o cabo que eu estava a usar (novo) tinha um mau contacto algures pelo meio. Troquei de cabo e FUNCIONOU... Com tantas mexidas, tive de voltar a alinhar o conjunto todo.

Depois o Laser deixou de funcionar... Pura e simplesmente deixou de funcionar. Pensei que fossem as pilhas fracas, que ele tivesse um período a partir do qual ele se desligava para poupar a bateria, até que percebi que a fita cola com que eu estava a obrigar o botão de On a estar para baixo tinha alguma elasticidade e o botão rapidamente ficava em Off... Tive de mudar de fita-cola... Escusado será dizer que com tanta mexidela tive de alinhar o conjunto todo NOVAMENTE.

Finalmente tentei alguns testes com as gotas a cair para ver qual seria o atraso (delay) necessário para o Smatrig disparar na altura certa.

Devo recordar que a esta altura ainda não tinha tirado uma única fotografia, a não ser de teste...

Depois foram os flashes... Primeiro só usei um e não gostei do resultado. Coloquei outro flash na equação e coloquei-o em Slave. Funcionou tudo muito bem... Experimentei e disparavam os dois, acertei as potências e um deles deixou de disparar... Conclusão, não tinha tempo suficiente, entre a queda de uma gota e outra para reciclar. Enfurecido não fui trocar de pilhas e resignei-me ao destino de que uma em cada duas exposições iria ficar mal iluminada... Ainda estou para perceber porque é que além deste problema, de vez em quando os flashes tiveram algum delay a sincronizar entre eles criando "sombras" estranhas...

Depois foi pré-focar, colocar a câmara em Bulb, desligar as luzes da cozinha, ligar o disparador remoto na câmara e encontrar o ritmo certo entre as gotas a cair, os flashes a disparar e a câmara a registar.

3 horas depois tinha 40 fotos, das quais fiquei orgulhoso de 3... ;) Sem esforço não há glória...

It seems that every time I think about doing a High Speed Shot like this EVERYTHING tries to put me to the test! Well, it happened again... I took about 3 hours to produce approximately 40 photos. Let me try to explain all of the steps taken.

First I needed to find a smooth reflective surface. That was easy, I used the kitchen table. I then had to create a structure from where the drops fell. That wasn't so easy. Where was I going to find, at 11pm a structure that could make my life easy? I tried several things, from brooms to lamps, until I tried a light stand and an umbrella (just to have an horizontal bar over the table).

Then I had to find a way to produce the drops, but in a way I could control flow. I tried a plastic bag with a hole, but that didn't give me a consistent place where the drops would fall. every time I touched the bag or it changed shape by emptying itself the drops shifted place. The solution was to use an IV fluid bottle and pipe.

With that detail out of my mind I turned to the triggering device. I knew that I was going to freeze the action through a flash firing and not the shutter speed, so I was going to use a triggering device that had a laser switch, so when the drop crossed the laser beam it would actuate the flash. I used Smatrig v.2.1 (http://www.doc-diy.net/photo/smatrig21/). But for that you need to align the laser and the receiver. That's when real problems started to emerge. You need to:

- Align the laser and the receiver in height at a distance big enough that would prevent the laser dot from appearing;
- Align the laser and the receiver in depth (in relation to the camera) to ensure that the laser goes through the path of the drops and touches the receiver;
- Connect the Smatrig to the flash by menas of a PC cable and wait for everything to work and doesn't need to be moved around.

Aligning it height wise was easy since I used some "Lego's" from my daughter in order for both elements to be at the same height, then I started the drips and "by eye", aligned the laser with the drops and the receiver (it took a while). Connected the flash, tested and it WORKED!!! Tried it again, with a small triggering delay and it stopped working... It took a long time to figure it out until I discovered that the cable I was using (a new one) had a bad contact. Switched cables and WORKED again... With so much jolting around, I had to realign the whole set.

Then the laser stopped working... It simply stopped working. I thought it might be dead batteries, auto power saving shutdown, until I realized that the duct tape I was using to press the On button slowly lost it's shape and the button was quickly in an Off position... Had to switch duct tape... Needless to say that I had to realign the whole set AGAIN...

Finally I tried to run some tests with the drops falling to set the delay for the Smatrig to fire at the right time.

I must stress that by this time I hadn't take any picture besides test shots...

Then came the flashes... I was using only one but I didn't like the outcome. So slapped another flash onto the equation and put it on slave. To my surprise it worked really well... Tried it and fine tuned the power of each and one of them stopped working intermittently... It didn't have enough time to recycle between two drops. Enraged has I was I didn't took the time to change batteries, instead resigned with the fact that every two exposures one would be badly lit... Oh, I'm still trying to understand why, every now and then, both flashes struggled to sync with one another and created these weird "shadows"...

I the pre-focused, put the camera on Bulb, shut down the kitchen lights, connect the remote trigger and find the right rhythm between drops falling, flashes firing and camera rolling.

3 hours later I had 40 photos in the bag from wich I was proud of about 3... ;) No pain no gain...

Esta semana estive em missão a fotografar as “Joinhas”.

As “Joinhas” são o produto de muito alta qualidade da creatividade e paixão por esta arte de uma amiga minha. No dia seguinte à Sessão Fotográfica as “Joinhas” iam para venda numa Feira de Artesanato e por isso a intenção era de ficar com o registo das peças que se poderiam vender até mesmo porque se tratam, em alguns casos, de peças únicas e irrepetiveis.

“Joinhas” are the high quality product that comes from the creativity and passion for this art by a friend of mine. The next day these pieces were going to be sold at a Crafts Market and so it was her desire to keep a record of the pieces that might be sold, because these are, in some cases, unique pieces.

Eles voltaram às lides do Rock com uma formação renovada e pediram-me, como grandes amigos que são, que eu lhes fizesse uma sessão fotográfica para promoção da banda. Esta foto foi a que eu retirei de toda a sessão como sendo a mais “espetacular”, acima de tudo porque consegui numa única exposição captar, ou aproximar-me, da essência do Rock tocado por esta banda... Valem a pena acompanhar... Trash Candies, um nome a reter...

This week marked the comeback of a band of friends, the Trash Candies (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Trash-Candies/156551327754441?fref=ts). They’re back to Rock out, with an renovated formation and asked me, because they’re good friends, to have a photo shoot in order to further promote the band. This was the shot I took out of that photo shoot as being the most “spectacular”, mainly because I managed to capture, or at least get close, to the essence of the kind of Rock this band plays… They are definitely worth following… Trash Candies, a name not to forget…

Dediquei esta semana ao detalhe, à beleza e à familia. Isto porque a minha cunhada me pediu para tirar algumas fotos de um trabalho de manicure que ela fez para o seu portfolio em que a maravilhosa modelo de mãos é a minha esposa. Para esta foto fiz uma edição mais “agressiva” para os lados da “Beauty” suavisando alguns detalhes da pele e intensificando a cor Fucsia das unhas. Para a semana talvez virá uma foto completamente diferente retirada de uma sessão de fotografia realizada hoje com uma banda de Rock. Mas isso fica para a próxima...

I’ve dedicated this week to details, beauty and family. And I mean that because my Sister-In-Law asked me to take some pictures of a manicure job she did for her portfolio in which the lovelly hand model was my very own wonderful wife. In the picture I edited a bit more “aggressively” towards the “beauty” side, softening some skin details and intensifying the Fucsia colour of the nails. Next week I’ll probably post something out of the Photo Session Idid today with a Rock band. But that’s a whole different story…

14/52 - Fisiograma I / Physiogram I

Esta semana, não sei porquê, mas foi particularmente dificil reservar um pouco de tempo para o Projeto 52. Em 14 semanas atrasei-me um dia na publicação da foto. E como penalidade tentei explorar um assunto que nunca tinha explorado. UM FISIOGRAMA... Os fisiogramas são o resultado de longas exposições em que uma fonte de luz num "pêndulo" forma graciosas formas no ar. Esta exposição teve 91s a f/18 (ISO 100) e foi feita com um LED vermelho e EL Wire azul. Longe de perfeita, mas é preciso começar por algum lugar...

Nota mental: Substituir a lã por um fio sem elasticidade...

PS: O Blogger está a dar comigo em doido... Ontem mais uma vez não me deixou publicar nada... Assim até parece que eu estou ainda mais atrasado...

This week, I don't know why, but I found it particularly difficult to find some time for my Project 52. In 14 weeks I got late one day. So, as a way of punishing myself I thought I'd tackle a subject I never tried before. A PHYSIOGRAM... Physiograms are the result of long exposures where a light source in a pendulum creates gracious shapes in thin air. This exposure was 91s long at f/18 (ISO 100) and was made using a red LED and blue EL Wire. It's far from perfect, but you've got to start somewhere...

Mental Note: don't use wool as the pendulum thread... Next time try something without elasticity...

PS: Blogger is driving me nuts... Yesterday, once again, it didn't let me post anything... This way it seems I'm even more delayed...

13/52 - Páscoa/Easter

A época da Páscoa tem tudo a ver com sacrificios, certo? Principalmente o de Cristo que, segundo a doutrina católica, se sacrificou por todos nós... Há também o sacrificio de não se comer carne na Sexta-Feira Santa. Mas não há sacrificio maior do que o meu... ACORDAR ÀS 5h30 DA MANHÃ PARA TIRAR ESTA FOTO...

E para os que dizem, quem corre por gosto não cansa, é porque nunca correu na vida e mesmo andar deve ter andado pouco... :)

Esta foto, ou melhor as 13 fotos que compoem esta panorâmica foram tiradas sobre a Muralha de Monção, e o rio que se vê é o Rio Minho (que nesta altura do ano está particularmente caudaloso). A outra margem retratada na panorâmica já não é Portugal, mas sim Espanha.

This photo, or the 13 photos that compose this panoramic were taken on top of the castle walls of Monção (Portugal), and the river is the River Minho (which bears a great deal of water this time of year). The other margin is not Portugal anymore, that’s Spain.

Não, não voltei a Itália... Pena minha... O que aconteceu é que esta semana tive muito ocupado com edição de fotos que deixei por editar quando estive fora, com a cobertura de um encontro de Sevilhanas e por isso a imagem que hoje publico é de dois fotogramas de um dos rolos que levei para Itália e que esta semana revelei... À esquerda a Praça de São Pedro, no Vaticano, vista da entrada da Basilica e à direita o Duomo em Florença.

Fotografadas com uma Canon 500 em película Fomapan 200ASA e revelada com Fomadon R09 (1+20; 4min; 20ºC) seguido de um banho de paragem com Fomacitro (1+19; 30s; 20ºC) e fixado com Fomafix (1+5; 3min; 20ºC).

No, I'm not back in Italy... Too bad... What happened was that I was very busy this week editing photos I had left when I was abroad, covering a Flamenco meeting and that's why I'm posting two frames from one of the rolls of film I took to Italy and thatI developed this week... On the left, Saint Peter's Square in Vatican City, as seen from the Basilica and on the right Il Duomo in Florence.

Que semana... Estou finalmente em Portugal... Foi uma semana de férias em cheio... Houve sol, houve chuva, uma trovoada, houve granizo, houve um Conclave, um novo Papa, uma Capela Sistina fechada, uns óculos de Sol perdidos numa casa de banho de um McDonalds, uns óculos partidos, e muitos gelados... Acho que posso sintetizar a minha semana de férias em Itália assim...
